Sunday at the Norfolk Beer Festival at Dragon Hall was much better than I expected it to be. Saturday night was just as packed as Friday night, and those two days drained the beer supply that had been purchased for the festival. Thankfully, there were bottled beers, two types of cider, and someone was able to grab two casks of beer from a local brewer for Sunday. No one expected Sunday to be a big day either, and it turned out to very well be an easy going day. There was only an afternoon session and it worked out very well.
           I was surprised because no one seemed extremely upset that there was almost no selection in beer there. At the door the prices were altered and costumers were made aware that the festival was basically out of alcohol, so everyone was well aware of the situation before purchasing admission into Dragon Hall. However, this did not stop a good number of people from showing up. Sunday afternoon welcomed the same amount of visitors that Saturday afternoon had. The bottled beer sold well, one of the cider casks was completely consumed, and both the new casks of beer were drunk by the end of the day.
           Looking back on my experience at Dragon Hall and my time volunteering at the Norwich and Norfolk Beer festival, I’ve come to realize that I could not have chosen a better place to do my mandatory volunteer/internship hours. This experience opened the eyes of an American boy who used to prefer a cold Fosters to warm local ale. I tried so many different types of local beers, all tasting different with unique qualities in colour and texture. My favourite would have been one of the Fat Cat’s contributions called the Cat & Canary. It was light and refreshing, with a fruity taste.
           At the end of my time there, I remembered something that another volunteer, Dodge, had mentioned to us before we started working on Friday. He reminded us that we should have fun, that the whole point of this festival was to have fun, try some new and interesting beers, and help others try them as well. Of course, the whole “have fun†part is something that you hear wherever you may be putting in effort to get something done, whether or not in reality it has any chance of being fun. I’ve heard it before starting a summer of sailing lessons with a bunch of bratty 11 year old girls (…not fun). But now I realize that Dodge meant that, and that it was possible. I spent a weekend serving delicious beer to interesting people, working alongside other knowledgeable and friendly volunteers, learning a lot about what kinds of tastes I like in a beer, and enjoying the beers myself. Not once were any of us volunteers without a glass at least half way full. This was actually encouraged, we were supposed to know the beers, we could only help customers with their decisions if we had made our own. I did have trouble describing the differences, beyond the colour of the beer, to costumers, but I was reassured that this skill will come in time, and for now I should just learn as much as I can. So that’s what I did, I drank beer and learned (probably the only place in the world where the words “beer†and “learned†accurately can describe an experience).
           After working on Sunday, I went out with some of the volunteers and some of the men playing in the band. We walked to a pub that was having another beer festival that weekend. I am only mentioning this to show how my relationship with the other members of the team developed throughout the weekend. By the time I was in the pub Sunday evening I was talking about where I was getting advice about where I should visit in Europe and how to handle life after college. Many of the other volunteers became my friends because of how close and well we all worked together. They all said that I need to do the Norwich Beer Festival held at St. Andrew’s Hall, but unfortunately I had to tell them that I was not going to be around for it.
           So I have this one last thing to say: If you have been to a beer festival, you should try working at one. You meet the best people on both sides of the bar, you get to drink amazing beers for free, and you learn so much about what makes beers special.

Public Humanities at City Hall: What Providence could have looked ...
While you were holed up in the library writing papers about various long-dead white men on Wednesday, the students of AMCV1550: Methods in Public Humanities finished their last day of class in a slightly more enjoyable way.  As their final project, the members of the class prepared an exhibit entitled “Capital Ideas: Planning Providence†which commemorates the city’s history by displaying various unimplemented design plans from the city’s archives.  In addition, the students in the class asked members of the Providence community to draw sketches of their ideal visions of Providence.
The event was held at City Hall, and Mayor Taveras came out to give a short speech on the way that the exhibit celebrates the history of Providence (shown above). Â Some of the designs (both from the archives and those contributed by Providence community members) were relatively standard (and close to what exists today, in fact), but others were pretty unconventional. Â Being writers for BlogDailyHerald, we were naturally far more interested in the weird than the newsworthy. Â So, we present to you what we (and apparently at least one other person) wish Providence actually looked like:
From the city’s archives
The ’70s were a crazy time.  In 1974, downtown Providence had become a bustling workplace, without many full time residents, which called for creating a more efficient public transportation system to ease the commuter stress of getting in and out of the city center.  One proposal was for a “Personal Rapid Transit†system to be built consisting of “small pods, each seating 4 to 6 individuals†that would zip around elevated tracks to various hubs around the city center.  While this may sound a lot like the transportation system used in the Will Smith movie, I, Robot which is set in the year 2036, this was a serious plan to create a new form of public transportation as well as end the use of cars in the city entirely.  So, here’s the real question: why was this awesome (although admittedly impractical) idea trashed?  For shame, Providence.
Other absurd plans that were actually proposed by city planners include sticking both City Hall and the State House on some sort of island surrounded by a moat and demolishing a fair number of the historic houses Benefit St. and College Hill to build sleek, modern buildings under the guise of “renewal.â€
From Providence community members (this is where it starts to get strange)
First up: Godzilla 2011. In this artist’s ideal Providence, it rains fire, and giant dinosaur-like creatures roam the streets, terrorizing the masses.  The capitol building also has a huge red beam that acts as a portal into space (so now we know the real back-up plan in case a disaster hits the city). Naturally feisty, Providence residents seem to be protesting against Godzilla’s despotic reign by gathering on a bridge and holding up signs.  Damn liberals. They’re probably Brown students.
This community member (RISD student?…if we correctly inferred from the artistic talent displayed here) envisions a time in the future when Providence is no longer located in boring old Rhode Island.  Rather, it has been relocated to the land of Super Mario Sunshine, where pineapple trees are ubiquitous and everything is shaded in primary colors.

My catch-all job description includes advising on preservation issues here at the Cleveland Institute of Music. I’m curious about tools for developing a digital archive here at CIM. “Tools†includes funding, partnering, platforms, open-source options, strategies for obtaining internal support, etc. This would ideally include an audio archive. CIM’s 100 year anniversary is coming up within the next 10 years, so the thought is timely. Looking forward to listening and learning later today.

Margaret R. Ewalt
Margaret R. Ewalt, Associate Professor of Spanish, has been teaching at Wake Forest University since 2001. She received her B.A. from Colby College, Maine and her Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. Her teaching, research, and publication interests include the Enlightenment in Spain and Spanish America, Eighteenth and Nineteenth-Century Latin American Literature, and Colonial Spanish American Literature. She is the author of _Peripheral Wonders: Nature, Knowledge, and Enlightenment in the Eighteenth-Century Orinoco_ (Bucknell University Press, 2008) and several articles on trans-Atlantic eighteenth-century natural history writing.
Her current book project is tentatively titled _Francis Bacon in Hispanic Science: Knowledge, the Nature of Modernity, and the Spanish World, 1539-1782_. “Modernity†is the focus of many studies on the 19th- and 20th century Spanish world. Less attention has been paid to Hispanic modernity during the 16th-18th centuries. This book studies Francis Bacon’s debts to the Spanish Jesuit José de Acosta and reveals ways that writers born in Spain and the Spanish viceroyalties opened learned Northern European discourse to non-European knowledge paradigms through their articulations of Baconianism. It challenges a myth of modernity that assigns the Spanish world a marginal role in the cultural history of western science and contributes to the humanities by documenting and interpreting a number of previously unidentified reciprocities of knowledge production during the 16th-18th centuries that upend Eurocentric claims about “scientific universality†and legitimate sources of knowledge, which continue to shape intercultural relations into the present day.

Econ, you are a thorn in my heart! Actually, you should not even be a thorn, the problem lies with myself for making you into one 
I remember that before year 5, I would dread studying for exams for humanities since I felt that there was quite a lot of memorization needed. So I was very happy that in in year 5 there would not be any humanities. However, there was still biology to mug for in year 5. So finally in year 6, there isn't biology, but I don't really like physics now. I'm not sure is it because when your worst subject is gone, another subject must take the place of worst subject. So when physics is gone, may I start to dislike either chemistry or math? Now I'm starting to question if I really like Math and Chem or is it that they just happen to be what I enjoy more when compared to subjects like physics. I think I do like Math! As for the sciences, I think I like them when I do well in them. That is why there is a shift in interest from Physics to Chemistry over the years. I like Chinese, I know I miss having Chinese lesson but I'm quite sure I do not miss humanities lesson

After 50 Years, Please Read the Book
As the 5oth Anniversary of the Eichmann Trial is upon us, there will be many opportunities to revisit and rethink the case itself as well as Hannah Arendt's account of it. This is a good thing.
Unfortunately, there will be all-too-many essays that use and abuse Arendt's writing to publicize their particular point of view. One case in point is the recent essay by Thane Rosenbaum in The Forward.
Professor Rosenbaum's main critique is that Arendt thinks the system of Nazism is to be blamed, not Eichmann himself. He writes:
The banality of Arendt’s argument, however, is that it is the system that must be blamed and not the people who simply become introduced to a new moral order. [read more]
Nowhere in Eichmann In Jerusalem does Arendt say that the system is to be blamed and not the individuals. On the contrary, her effort  in the book is to articulate the political and legal grounds to justify executing Eichmann for his wrongs--grounds she believes the trial court in Jerusalem failed to provide.
As with so many of Arendt's critics, Professor Rosenbaum does not bother to cite from the book. I assume he read it. And yet, his argument suggest that this reading is in the distant past.
Arendt's argument is nuanced and strong and has been responsibly defended and criticized by many. It is, in short:
1. That Eichmann's monstrous deeds, his evil deeds, cannot be explained by appealing to his inner monstrosity.  Arendt asked that we take seriously the fact that normal people (and normal is not the same as innocent) can participate in and do horribly evil acts. The enduring impact of her book is based in the power and truth of that insight, one that Wiesel, as well as Rosenbaum, refuses to accept. To disagree with her is one thing. To say that she argued that Eichmann was innocent and not to blame is to fully mischaracterize her argument. It is to offer cliché as fact.
2. Arendt's own judgment of Eichmann was that he should be hanged. Here she agreed wholeheartedly with the Court in Jerusalem.
3. Her disagreement with the Court was only on the why. For the Court, Eichmann was guilty of breaking the law. Specifically, the Court found Eichmann guilty of was violating Section 23 of the Israeli Code Ordinance, a code which makes it a crime to give counsel or advice to others or to aid and abet others in a criminal act. In effect, since the Court found no evidence of Eichmann having actually killed anyone (his job was to make sure the trains and mechanisms of transport led the Jews to their destruction), he was guilty of aiding and abetting mass murder. The Israeli Court recognized, as did Arendt, that it was somehow wrong to convict Eichmann of the crime of aiding and abettingâ€"Given what he had done, aiding and abetting seemed meaningless. The Court struggled to articulate a different standard, but it was, Arendt saw, constrained by the law and powerless to do so.
4. Arendt argued instead that the Court should have departed from legal reasoning and realized that Eichmann represented a wholly new form of criminal, one whose wrongs were so extraordinary as to demand an extraordinary verdict. Arendt's departure from the Court was thus occasioned by her sense that Eichmann must be found guilty, but that his guilt transcended legal categories. It is for this reason that she appeals to "long-forgotten propositions" of revenge; and it is for this reason that her own judgment, the one she says the Court should have "dared" to give, avoided all legalities and judged that Eichmann must die simply because he, Adolf Eichmann, "carried out, and actively supported, a policy of mass murder." This is a radical claim, that a Court should have dared to issue a judgment outside the law in recognition of the extraordinary nature of the case. And yet that is her argument.
To say that Arendt does not blame Eichmann is simply to not read these lines. Over and over Arendt's book has been attacked by people who discredit her without reading her. But the book remains one of the most important and provocative accounts not only of an extraordinary trial, but of the need to maintain moral judgments in an age of totalitarian mass movements. There are few more important books of our time. So let's all agree on one thing. Before you tear it apart, read the book.

Money, morality, technology, education - Great Lakes THAT Camp 2011
Here’s a very last-minute post / session idea, somewhat unformed â€" I’ve been thinking a good bit lately about the role of money in digital humanities, and indeed higher education more generally. Some academics outside digital humanities really hate digital humanists’ willingness to accept money from corporations like Microsoft and Google, for instance, and at the same time I think a good bit of the recent “boom†in digital humanities is due to the undeniable fact that there’s money in and for digital humanities. The hideous job market situation for humanities PhDs isn’t nearly as bad for humanities PhDs who have some tech skills and are willing to move into administrative positions, and even though I am one of those people, I deplore the fact that universities are willing to create stable full-time jobs for the legions of staff members necessary to support university technology, but they’re not willing to create stable full-time jobs for university teachers.
Audrey Watters and I were even talking about putting together some kind of book project around this, and we could use a session to, heck, write a proposal or something. We’d love to get people debating one another on this. Interested?

UIS research symposiums provide students with valuable experience
Student researchers at the University of Illinois Springfield got a chance to show off their research and discuss their findings during two recent symposiums.
The Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Research Symposium and Science Research Symposium offered students the chance to speak about their topics before a public audience.
“It gives them a much deeper understanding of the research process and it also allows them to practice communicating those results back out to the broader community,†said Lynn Pardie, UIS Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
Layne Morsch, chair of the Science Research Symposium and assistant professor of Chemistry has found students learn a valuable lesson from talking about their research. He says students not only have to be prepared, but really understand what you are talking about.
“It gives our students a chance to present the research they’ve been doing in a less intimidating atmosphere than a national meeting where there might be thousands of people there from all over the United States or the world,†said Morsch.
Pardie says the research process is essential to a college education because it teaches students to be keen observers of people around them and ask good questions.
“They get to practice their professional communication skills and they have the opportunity to be in the role of a researcher, answering questions,†said Pardie.
Amanda Dahlquist, a graduate student who chaired the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Research Symposium says students are often nervous about giving a presentation, but they realize the reward.
“It’s a great opportunity to give students a chance to show off work that they’ve done and to let them take pride in their own research,†said Dahlquist.

In order to examine how the philosophy of Nihilism gave rise to realism it is necessary to define both in order to establish a connection between them. Nihilism is the philosophy that life lacks inherent meaning and value. Realism is the portrayal of human behavior and situation without embellishment or romance so as to portray life “as it really is†independent of the constructs of human observation. So by their very nature they are connected. Nihilism strips the mystical element away from life, and realism is the view that one is left with Nihilism has dispensed with the frills that is characteristic of many artistic styles.
Hemingway’s Nihilistic viewpoint produces realism when he focuses on death. The detached manner in which writes about death creates a void of meaning. Whereas in many other eras such as the Anglo-Saxon death is glorified, in the Moderna Era it is often broken down to the bare biological essentials.
In John Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath, his reaction to the tragic dustbowl creates an extremely realistic effect. By chronicling the hardships of life in the Midwest during this time period, and emphasizing the cruel nature of the banks, and the senseless misery caused by lost land he creates an extremely brings realism into clear focus.
The frustration of these poor farmers trickled down to the incoming generation, and the concepts of realism which are often bestowed following hardship, was impressed onto the next generation of thinkers.

JUHU A4 MLE 2 « Humanities 1: Introduction to the Humanities
I went to the Starbucks near the College of Alameda.While waiting in line for my order, the barista conversed with me. I usually don’t really converse with the barista since there is always a lot of people in Starbucks. However, that day, there wasn’t a lot of people. So, while deciding my order, the barista suggested me drinks that were of interest to me. I really love caramel and whip cream so she suggested the Caramel Frappucino. Normally, I would order the Caramel Macchiato because I love caramel and macchiatos aren’t that sweet.
I eventually ordered the Caramel Frappucino. However, it was really sweet and I can’t really handle sweet things. But, it was still tasty. I loved how the whip cream and the coffee blended so wonderfully together. The caramel also melted magnificently in my mouth. I then asked the barista if there was a version of this that has less sugar. The barista then told me that I could get a Caramel Light Frappucino. Since, I enjoyed the Caramel Frappucino so much, next time, I would get the Caramel Light Frappucino.
Going to Starbucks help me work on my homework and other school related work. I feel that I could actually concentrate in my corner of Starbucks. At home, I always get distracted and I would procrastinate. My corner isn’t really special. I sat on a sofa seat; it was soft and I could relax and do my work. While in my corner, I observed various types of people. There are students studying, elders reading newspapers and people ordering. For me, I am in the students studying section or type. I go there to do my work and study sometimes. There are also elders that would go there to relax and read the papers and converse with other elders. There are also people ordering. Most of them are those business type people. They are dressed nicely, probably on a coffee run for their company.
I sat next to a student who was on his laptop. This student worked very diligently and focused on his work. He is similar to me, we were both doing our homework probably because we couldn’t do work at home. I greeted him and he greeted me back. Then we went back to work. It seems that we both didn’t really want to converse with each other since we are busy with our own work. However, I think that the situation would be different if it was in the summer because we’re on break. This is because, we could actually pause and converse about random things. I stayed in Starbucks for about 2 hours. Time past by really fast and I didn’t even notice that I stayed for such a long time. After an hour of observing people, I focused on work. I was first multi-tasking because I wanted to do my homework and look at people. But after a while, the scene was repeating itself and everything was so similar. Therefore, I focused my attention on only work.
Starbucks is really for anyone and everyone. This is the good thing about Starbucks or any coffee shop. They let anyone and everyone stay for a long time and they won’t kick anyone out. I know that for other shops, they would kick you out if you stay too long. For instance, there are restaurants that will ask you to leave if you stay for a while because you aren’t continuously eating their food. Basically, you cannot stay and read your book or do your homework in most restaurants. But for coffee shops, you can stay and read the whole book if you wanted or do all your homework.
Having observing people in Starbucks made me realize that the people who come to Starbucks are the same types every time. The types are students, elders and adults in need of caffeine to focus on their jobs. Every single one of them are either in need of caffeine or need a place to stay and relax.

Going into this class I had many anxieties. It was going to be the hardest of all the college classes I have taken thus far and I just wasn't looking forward to it. The thought of having 3 teachers in one class scared me and the length of each class seemed like it was going to be hard to sit through. The class itself wasn't as 'hard' as I thought it would be. The work was very simple :If you kept up with it, then you were fine. The reading questions really helped me better understand the stories, because sometimes the stories had languages and ways of writing that i was not familiar with. The lit midterm was very straight forward, even though I did not prepare as well as I should have for it. I really enjoyed learning about different cultures. Dr. Armstrong was a great instructor as well. He made assignments that were die very clear and we knew exactly what was expected os us, with the exception of the midterm IDEE, but I believe that was just a misunderstanding. As for the art portion of the class, Tolbert was a very intertaining professor. I really enjoyed his lectures and he was very interesting to listen to. He made the class much more enjoyable than I was expecting. His quizes were straight forward and we knew exactly what we needed to study. I really like his style of teaching. He was very laid back and made us feel comfortable as students. He made me enjoy art, where I didn't before. The music portion of the class was my least enjoyable. The instructor had many things happen this semester that I guess hindered his ability to be at class all the time or answer my emails. I was constantly confused as to what he wanted from us on the music analysis papers and I have no idea what my grade in this portion of the class is. He was not very clear in his lectures or clear on what pieces he wanted us to know. I feel like it was more of a guessing game on my part than a learning tool. Overall the class went well. I may not have the best grade coming out of it, but I will just be happy to be done with this portion of Humanities!

There's so such of a designing edge to it and I've always been disposed to power and designing. My collection pedagogue is a new pedagogue and is our arts teacher. I'm rattling hunting forward to classes with her and Mr K for my Pol. Science classes. Now most the class, well its not rattling good. No collection with new grouping seems good in the beginning. There are commerce students (without maths' ones) and discipline students in 11 D. Only 19 discipline students in a collection of 36. And rattling few scarce boys in Humanities. I don't rattling understand and compass why grouping can't respect Humanties' as a stream. (A journal place most this is coming soon). I meet hit maggi, arjun and mg with me. And i must also calculate devika. There are some serious unsmooth girls in my class. Cracked not same me but in a different way. One chic passes terrible digit liners which attain no sense.
